Đuro Capor, from the local organisation “Srđ Je Naš” (Srdj is ours), presenting the initiative and activities of “Srđ Je Naš” at the Social Context conference at Art Workshop Lazareti in Dubrovnik, May 10 2014
The Citizens’ Initiative Srđ is Ours, established in 2010, struggles to preserve the Dubrovnik cultural and natural heritage, public spaces and citizens’ right to participate in decision-making processes.
In less than two years of its existence the Initiative organized a number of public happenings (public discussions, lectures, film screenings). It initiated legal actions, it made pleas to the public and competent institutions, it informed the public about the necessity of protection of nature, public interests and public spaces, it motivated the citizens to participate more actively in the decision-making processes concerning passing of the urban development plan (as well as participating in public discussions, or writing objections), it initiated an informative campaign and published two newspaper issues. The Initiative has managed to procure financial funding for its activities through the projects of the National Foundation for Civil Society Development and has won several awards like GONG (Non-Partisan Citizen’s Organisation) Award for citizens’ activism and democracy development as well as the reader’s award for the most civic-minded person of the year organised by the local weekly newspaper Dubrovački list.
